I'm still procrastinating writing about my summer because I need a little more time to process saying goodbye to my internship friends but there have been some professional milestones (idk if that's the right word to use here?) that I wanted to note down. I thought I'd be good to put some positive things on paper so I have something to bring my mood up next time I'm being a Debbie downer.

So first things first, my science writing internship got renewed which I am very excited about. I love science writing because I combines two of my greatest passions in life - and I like the process of making research more accessible for general audiences bc I can def emphasize with reading through an academic paper and ending up feeling bamboozled bc I'm not an expert in the field and there not the target audience. Plus, I find it valuable to contextualize the big picture meaning of research like real world applications or how it ties into the broader Zeitgeist and such.

Also I love conducting interviews so much! Constructing interview questions is a lot of fun and I love hearing what researchers have to say because they have so many enriching anecdotes and there is something universally human about the trial and error process they experience with their work.

And pertaining to that internship I got promoted to intern advisor so I'll also help new interns get settled in. And one of my co-advisors is an internship buddy I made last year (she's really sweet and her research is about mysterious holes on Mars). I have a decent amount of research experience under my belt so I hope I can be a good resource for my fellow interns especially when it comes to things like communication with their mentors and imposter syndrome (heaven knows it's hard to feel smart when surrounded by a bunch of fellow physicists and astronomers who seem so much more big brained. I've def been there my fair share of times).

And I'd also love to share some of my technical communication skills with the interns I'm advising so that they can better communicate their research. Heck, I could even pitch some story leads to my mentor to give my fellow interns' projects more publicity.

Now onwards to some physics research updates. I finished my summer internship deliverables in time, including my academic poster and my research paper and I thankfully had time to edit and refine those. Also I feel that even though I have such a long way to go in terms of understanding nuclear physics and refining my coding skills, I feel like I have learned a lot and it was rewarding to reach a decent point of completion pertaining to my project of recovering data for damaged targets.

And about a week ago I submitted an abstract so I can attend a big physics conference in Boston where I will be able to present my research if I can accepted. My fellowship should be able to cover any costs that the conference itself won't cover which I am very grateful for. And my summer internship friends signed up for the conference so I really really hope we all can go because I already miss them to bits and can't wait to see them again especially since most of them are clustered along the east coast and midwest while I'm on the other side of the country. Also ppl scout undergrads as potential grad students at this conference so I need to take advantage of this great networking opportunity and do a good job (I'd really like to relocate to the East Coast or Midwest for grad school)!

In addition to all that jazz I get to continue working with the same physics research group during the fall semester and I'm excited to do more data analysis! Also today I got my headshots from my summer internship so I got to update my linkedin profile picture and now it looks so much more professional and snazzy 😭🩷

And I got to join a national physics committee which I'm also hyped about because I get to help address issues like harassment in my subfield (which is a topic I'm invested in addressing given that I've seen it first hand). Anyways I hope I can help voice the concerns and ideas of my fellow undergrads

Anyways lots of exciting stuff!!
