Hey y'all,

I'm Sam and I decided to hop over to DreamWidth because a lot of people in fandom servers have been hyping up how awesome this site is. I don't really know how DreamWidth works exactly but I also didn't really understand how AO3 worked when I started posting fics (praise be upon my roommate who explained tagging to me) so I guess I'll just wing it here too XD

Anyways, I guess I'll talk about my WIPs, the writing process and occasional ramblings about life here. I write as [archiveofourown.org profile] samthehyena and sometimes I post/reblog miscellaneous fandom stuff on [tumblr.com profile] samthehyena . Most of my stuff is BNHA crackfic and/or femslash. Live, laugh, love Togachako.

But yeah I'm totes excited to start interacting with people here :D

Lately, I've been reflecting a lot on writing femslash in the BNHA fandom. I don't know, I've just been growing more frustrated with the discrepancy between how well M/M fics do compared to F/F fics.

So who knows what’s next? Probably no togachako oneshots for a while from me let alone event fics (save for the one that’s already written). But I still feel passionate about the togachako multi chaps because they challenge me and have stuff that is new and exciting to me that I haven’t necessarily read/written before. I guess for the foreseeable future I’ll focus on Knee Deep In the Passenger Seat and Dear Google because I’m still fixated on the stories that can only be told in longform rather than shorter oneshots.

And mayhaps I’ll even expand to other fandoms. Descendants 4 brainrot has been festering in my brain – there are some high quality femslash ships with enemies to lovers and tragic yuri vibes and I am obsessed. Also, since the movie literally came out last month I need to get to it and crank out more femslash descendants fics :DDD (cinderella/queen of hearts only has 22 fics when I checked yesterday so it’s high time i fan the flames of this precious rarepair)

I'm still procrastinating writing about my summer because I need a little more time to process saying goodbye to my internship friends but there have been some professional milestones (idk if that's the right word to use here?) that I wanted to note down. I thought I'd be good to put some positive things on paper so I have something to bring my mood up next time I'm being a Debbie downer.

So Fic Fight ended about a week ago and now that I’ve had a chance to recover a bit from all that zooming, it’s time for a reflection! I’ll also try to have a little reflection on how fic fight has contributed to my overall perspective on fanfic events as a whole.

But anyways here’s the TLDR of my thoughts on Fic Fight 2024: The vibes were great, everyone was super encouraging, a big thank you to the event planners for all their hard work and I loved having the chance to chase after every impulsive creative whim I had.

I posted this same togachako fic rec masterlist on my Tumblr a couple days ago, but I'm copypasting these recs here too since I felt like that'd be a good idea. I'll try to update this list with more recs every once in a while. All the fics listed are complete.

So NWA's fourth annual fic fight just started on June 1 and it's been super fun so far. The event is hosted by the no writing academia discord server and essentially writers are sorted into different teams with fun themed names (heroes, vigilantes and villains) and "attack" ppl in other teams by writing for their prompts. And people really are on a roll since there are already 60+ fics in the collection since the event started.

I had some time to kill this weekend so I managed to get 5 oneshots written and posted for fic fight and it was like 12K total (there are more typos in my writing than usually because I zooming through trying to get as many ideas onto the page as quickly as possible). Anyways, it's been super fun and I'm so glad that the event has started at last so that I was finally able to get started on the prompts I'd frothing over since sign-ups opened in late May. I think my favorite thing I've written for fic fight so far is my rate my professor fic because I love working with unconventional formats -- but my fic about Hawks writing fanfic and my Togachako anonymous online dating fic are close seconds.

Anyways, I'll probably crank out more more stuff for fic fight when I get another pocket of extended free time. I might also do a collab with a friend. I really would give writing a Natshig-centric fic a whirl for the first time - they are one of my fav ships but I have always been scared to write them (I don't have much video game knowledge so I worry that I won't do them justice outside of like say a fantasy AU). I might also do a collab with a friend. But yeah I'm super excited to see everyone's creations! I will be taking a break from writing for a couple of days though because I girlbossed too close to the sun and have some minor finger cramps right now XD

I'm also excited to browse through the Fic Fight 2024 collection some more when I find the time. There was a humorous and sweet RodyDeku oneshot in there that I really enjoyed as well as a fun fic about Bakugo asking Izuku to punch him in the face for an undercover mission. Also, I was gifted an awesome dabihawks switched at birth fic!

And I've been chatting a lot with my beloved main enabler for all things Kiribaku and femslash about all the ideas and prompts for fic fight that have been on our minds so that has been super fun! Like I love the server atmosphere - everyone is super encouraging and hyping each other up. I don't think I've seen this level of really energetic creative vibes all in one place outside of PBNHA (and the New Year's Togachako zine while it was still in its creation period).

But yeah I think this event has really helped me draw conclusions about I most enjoy as a writer. I think I generally have more fun writing humorous fics (with a few exceptions) and I think I prefer events that are more similar in format to exchanges (as opposed to bangs or zines). I might write a longer reflection about events at some point because I have a lot of thoughts on the matter but I think I need more time to let my thoughts marinate.

Sorry that I disappeared from DW for a hot minute... or rather a couple of months XD
Uni just got really hectic during the second half of the semester so I wasn't online as much. Heck, I didn't even stress-write as much as I usually would to cope because I just didn't really have the writing spoons. And then after the semester ended there was a power outage for a week because a tornado knocked out the power and internet. But I'm all safe and sound and so are my folks, so all is well that ends well. Anyways, this post is gonna be long and rambly because a lot of stuff (good and bad) has been going on.

And I am very exciting to catch up on all the DW posts I missed out! Based on scrolling through my feed, y'all have had a lot of cool stuff to say.

Anyways, that's a rundown of some of the things that have been going on in my life. I might talk about my summer research internship at some point. It starts next week :D

I'm free of midterms (some of them went well one didn't 🤭)! And it's spring break time hurray! So far it's been a chill week at my Grandma's house in the middle of nowhere. I've mostly been chipping away at longfic and my backlog of stuff to study, news articles to draft etc etc.

Someone in a Discord server asked about how ppl come to up with fic titles and that got me thinking. Especially because in all honesty titles are something I half ass and regularly don't come up with until I'm about to post on AO3 and stare at that empty little title box.

I guess I do have a few go-tos though:

  • song titles/references: e.g. "i'll make it through the winter"
  • titles phrased as questions: e.g. "How can I tell if my gaydar is broken?"
  • one word titles that suit the theme: e.g. "Kaleidoscope"
  • titles that are like statements or commonly used phrases: "Your Order, Love", "Can't Buy Love", "So Many Red Flags", "Quirks For Sale!"
  • instructional style title: "Nana's Guide to Ending 200 Years of Pining", "Dabi's New York Times Bestselling Cookbook"
  • parentheses: Come to the dark side (we have waffles)
  • poetic titles: e.g. "When You Sing In Lilies"

Plotting vs. Pantsing

When it comes to planning out fics in details with outlines (plotting) or letting a story have a mind of its own and improvising with a vague end destination in mind (pantsing), I've always fallen somewhere toward the middle. That makes me a plotser I guess? Maybe a little more pantser-heavy when it comes to fanfic. Honestly, the level of planning versus improvising depends on the outline. Especially with one shots I often hop write into it with a basic premise in mind and try to crank out the entire thing in one sitting because I like having my writing be compartmentalized in that way. Plus, the bulk of my original fiction stuff from before I starting writing fanfic in November 2022 was short fiction - whether that be poetry or vignettes - so I think even when I wing it I have enough of a sense of story structure to get in a "beginning", "middle" and "ending" or in the very least I have some sort of thematic connective tissue.

(Not that I haven't written one-shots I'm not fond of.  It's a consequence of not really thinking stuff out and impulsively posting stories right after drafting them without a thorough proof-reading *shrugs*. And sometimes I see that readers or authors I like have kudosed those one-shots and internally I'm screaming "No, don't perceive me - this objectively is some of my worst work. The brainrot took over and not in a good way XD". Still, ultimately I have no major regrets though. The first chapter of my first BNHA fanfic was outlined, written and posted 24 hours before a calc final and it's still one of my fav things I've written .)

But in a kind of paradoxically way in spite of how much of my writing is improvised on the spot, I do generally like structure in most areas of life. Hence why my uni major is rooted in STEM - sometimes I enjoy having a clear direction, you know? And a handful of times my writing process has intersected with my general perference for structure. On the one hand, having too much planned out will make writing "boring" for me because I like being surprised but especially with multichaps if I don't have a road map with plot beats to hit odds are that I'll get lost in the muddled middle and never finish the story. (First chapters and epilogues are my fav thing to write so I just generally have a hard write getting through Act 2 in my own stories.)

Anyways, every one of my multichaps demands a difference approach but outlining has worked quite well for my midlength fics where I have a sentence or two summing up every chapter I plan on writing. It's specific enough that I don't get lost in the sauce but flexible enough that I can shove in extra character dynamics, scenes or even full on chapters depending on my mood. And with my Spider-Man!Shinsou longfic sticking to my basic outline has been going pretty well because even though I've added in scenes and chapters to flesh out character dynamics the story beats I had in mind since I made the outline have generally remained in place.

But Dear Google, is my girlfriend a vampire? the main fic I'm focusing on aside from event fics is rebelling against sticking to its outline at every turn LMAO
